An old gun at the Weymouth Sea Cadet Training Centre

The naval base was bombed in the Second World War and played its part in deciding the war in Europe when nearly half a million American troops embarked at Portland to do their bit in the D-Day landings.
Recently, the naval base has been used as a sea training centre with ships from the Royal Navy regularly participating in training programmes that included simulated warfare and part of the Falklands task force set sail from Portland.
The old gun I photographed above was lying in a quiet corner of the Sea Cadet Training Centre, as if it was asleep, and I wondered if it had ever seen active service.
I imagined a young lad like my 19 year old son perched high on an aircraft carrier or gunboat with high explosives bursting all around firing again and again in the hope he would kill the enemy before they killed him and his mates.
In that moment, there was a glory at the bravery of those who have faced the fear they must have felt but also a sadness that the gun’s days were done and those who cleaned it and fired it were also probably gone too.
Weymouth Town Bridge which I watched open and close and chatted to an old man who had first come to Weymouth and Portland to serve on an aircraft carrier.
