Blackberry Wine by Joanne Harris, author of chocolat – review by Rob Hopcott.

Memory of the old familiar landscape of his childhood, traps Jay Macintosh in a world happier than the present, and to which he wants to return.

A friend from the past left him a bottle of home-brewed wine which looks like providing the key to an old mystery and a doorway into a new world.

As the strange brew takes effect, Jay finds himself in a farmhouse in need of renovation in a French Village. A ghost from the past is there to confront him, and the hermit-like Marise – possessed, beautiful and dangerous – has a horrifying secret.

There is a mysterious, magical chemistry between them that draws the reader in and on to strange places. Joanne Harris is a wonderfully sensuous writer who conveys the earthly pleasures of gastronomy, home-brew wine and country scents. Blackberry Wine is a great read for those who like a rich literary texture that rewards reading again and again.
